MODERN CONCEPT OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY ON AIDS PATHOGENESIS. Initially recognized in USA in 1981, HIV/AIDS infection was reported for the first time by CDC when there was an unexplained occurrence of a pneumonia with Pneumocystis carinii and of Kaposi sarcoma. In 1983, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was isolated from a patient having a limphoadenopathology and till 1984 it was clearly shown that this is the causing agent of AIDS. The virus, pertaining to the family of Retroviridae, subfamily lentiviruses, is considered to be, regarding to some studies, originated through SIV (“Simian Immunodeficiency Virus”) virus mutations. The HIV/AIDS global epidemy killed more than 3 milion people in 2003 and a number of 5 milion persons aquired the HIV virus raising the number of those infected up to 40 milion people. The study contains the analysis of cases regarding the HIV infection and AIDS disease in Arad, Romania on a ten years period (1994 – 2003). One of the most important applications of molecular biology in HIV infection is Nucleic Acid Testing. NAT holds the promise of closing the window of infectiousness for HIV in the general blood suppply. The research for obtaining a specific vaccines began in 1996, by creating national commitees and research institutions. The anti-HIV vaccine should be acceptable regarding it’s cost, easy to carry, deposit and administrate, but most of all, it should determine a powerfull immune reaction with long-term protection outcome for all subtypes of HIV.
