Abstract:	TOXIC POTENTIAL EVALUATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL NITRATES, NITRITS AND NITROSAMINES. Nitratres are direct components of human diet and indirect precursors of nitrosamines. Unmodified, the nitrate ion it’s not dangerous for the organism, but when it’s transformed in nitrit ion, it becomes directly toxic, by transforming hemoglobin in methemoglobin, producing vasodilatation and reducing the vitamine A reserves. A series of nitrosamines, especially those who require metabolic activation, have produced hepatic and pulmonar carcinomas in an experiment conducted on mice. Nitrosamines were injected intraperitoneal and no matter what dose was used, all the animals have developed hepatocellular carcinoma, younger mice being more affected than the old ones. Due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic potential, the research on nitrosamines and their precursors, as well as on finding adequate protection measures, it should be a major preoccupation for the health public institutions worldwide.
