Abstract: We have evaluated the aetiological spectrum and the prevalence of tinea barbae fungal infection in patients from Arad County. Our data was compared to an old study from 1956 made by R. Ilea. As a reference method for identification we used the conventional methods of mycological diagnosis, that is to say direct examination and culture test. What we have observed is a prevalence of infection of 2% on a group of patients with clinical suspicion. The main aetiological agents isolated were: Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes (85, 7%) and T. rubrum. Most of the patients were from rural areas, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes being well present in the countryside, and amongst farm animals. The infection is subdiagnosed by non-dermatologists, but direct mycotic examination can give certitude in diagnosis by having a sensibility and specificity of 100%. Curiously, Trichophyton verrucosum – the causative agent of bovine dermatophytosis – was not isolated from this particular type of lesions in patients from Arad County neither in 1959 nor today. The antropophilic dermatophytes T. tonsurans and T. violaceum that were present in the 1959 study were absent this time, a proof that the mycotic flora is constantly changing. Those dermatophytes were probably replaced by T. rubrum.
